Welcome Ramadhan !!!

What is the Purpose of Fasting During the Month of Ramadhan?

Allah the Exalted in Might says in the glorious Qur'an in chapter 2 (Surah Bakara) verse number 183 that  the fasting has been even prescribed for the people before us,

“O ye who believe! fasting is prescribed to you as it was prescribed to those before you”.

Allah Azza Wajal prescribed fasting for a unique reason which has been mentioned by himself in the last and final revelation to the whole of mankind, the Glorious Qur’an as:

“That you may become Al-Muttaqûn (the pious, God-fearing)” [Qur’an 2:183]

What is so special about the month of Ramadhan?

Allah Azza Wajal says in the Qur’an in chapter 2 (Surah Bakara) verse number 185:

The month of Ramadan in which was revealed the Qur'an, a guidance for mankind, and clear proofs of the guidance, and the Criterion (of right and wrong). And whosoever of you is present, let him fast the month”

                    The Merits of Ablution (Wudu')
Allah says:
"O you who believe! When you intend to offer As-Salat, wash your faces and your hands
up to the elbows, wipe your heads, and your feet up to the ankles'' (Glorious Qur’an 5:6)

*   Abu Malik Al-Ash`ari (R.A) reported: The Messenger of Allah (pbuh) said: "Wudu' is half the Iman”. [Muslim].

*   Umar bin Al-Khattab (R.A) reported: The Messenger of Allah (pbuh) said, "Whoever of you performs Wudu' carefully and then affirms: `Ash-hadu an la ilaha illallahu Wahdahu la sharika Lahu, wa ash-hadu anna Muhammadan `abduhu wa Rasuluhu [I testify that there so no true god except Allah Alone, Who has no partners and that Muhammad (pbuh) is His slave and Messenger], the eight gates of Jannah are opened for him. He may enter through whichever of these gates he desires”. [Muslim]. In At-Tirmidhi, it is added: "Allahummaj-`alni minat-tawwabina, waj-`alni minal-mutatahhirin (O Allah make me among those who repent and purify themselves)”.

*   Abu Hurairah (R.A) reported: I heard the Messenger of Allah (pbuh) saying: "On the Day of Resurrection, my followers (or Ummah) will be summoned `Al-Ghurr Al-Muhajjalun' from the traces of Wudu'. Whoever can increase the area of his radiance should do so”. [Al-Bukhari and Muslim]. [It refers to that light which will shine through the hands and feet of the believers because of their habit of performing Wudu]

*   Abu Hurairah (R.A) reported: I heard my Khalil (the Messenger of Allah (pbuh)) as saying, "The adornment of the believer (in Jannah) will reach the places where the water of Wudu' reaches (his body)”. [Muslim].

*   Uthman bin`Affan (R.A) reported: The Messenger of Allah (pbuh) said, "He who performs the Wudu' perfectly, his sins will depart from his body, even from under his nails”. [Muslim].
[sins, here stands for minor sins which are not related to the rights of people and major sins]

*   Uthman bin `Affan (R.A) reported: I saw the Messenger of Allah (pbuh) performing Wudu' the way I have just done it and said, "He who performs Wudu' like this, his previous sins will be forgiven and his Salat and walking to the mosque will be considered as supererogatory act of worship.'' [Muslim].

*   Abu Hurairah (R.A) reported: The Messenger of Allah  (pbuh) said, "When a Muslim, or a believer, washes his face (in Wudu'), every sin which he committed with his eyes, will be washed away from his face with water, or with the last drop of water; when he washes his hands, every sin which is committed by his hands will be effaced from his hands with the water, or with the last drop of water; and when he washes his feet, every sin his feet committed will be washed away with the water, or with the last drop of water; until he finally emerges cleansed of all his sins”. [Muslim].

*   Abu Hurairah (R.A) reported: The Messenger of Allah (pbuh) went to the (Baqi`) cemetery and said, "May you be secured from punishment, O dwellers of abode of the believers! We, if Allah wills, will follow you. I wish we see my brothers.'' The Companions said, "O Messenger of Allah! Are not we your brothers?'' He (pbuh) said, "You are my Companions, but my brothers are those who have not come into the world yet.'' They said; "O Messenger of Allah! How will you recognize those of your Ummah who are not born yet?'' He (pbuh) said, "Say, if a man has white-footed horses with white foreheads among horses which are pure black, will he not recognize his own horses?'' They said; "Certainly, O Messenger of Allah!'' He (pbuh) said, "They (my followers) will come with bright faces and white limbs because of Wudu'; and I will arrive at the Haud (Al-Kauthar) ahead of them”. [Muslim].

*   Abu Hurairah (R.A) reported: The Messenger of Allah (pbuh) said, "Shall I not tell you something by which Allah effaces the sins and elevates ranks (in Jannah)?'' The Companions said; "Certainly, O Messenger of Allah.'' He (pbuh) said, "Performing the Wudu' thoroughly in spite of difficult circumstances, walking with more paces to the mosque, and waiting for the next As-Salat after observing Salat; and that is Ar-Ribat, and that is Ar-Ribat”. [Muslim].
[To wait for the next Salat after offering a Salat is regarded as Ribat because, a person keeps himself constantly engaged in the obedience and worship of Allah and keep Satan away from him.]

ISLAM, IMAAN & IHSAN

On the authority of 'Umar (r.a), who said:

"While we were one day sitting with the Messenger of Allah (saw), there appeared before us a man dressed in extremely white clothes and with very black hair. No traces of journeying were visible on him, and none of us knew him. He sat down close by the Prophet (pbuh) rested his knee against his thighs, and said, “O Muhammad (pbuh) Inform me about Islam." The Messenger of Allah (pbuh) answered, "Islam is that you should;

i)       Testify that there is no deity except Allah and that Muhammad (pbuh) is His Messenger
ii)     Perform Salaah (ritual prayer),
iii)   Pay Zakaah,
iv)   Fast during Ramadan, and
v)     Perform Hajj (pilgrimage) to the House (the Ka'bah at Makkah), if you can find a way to it (or find the means for making the journey to it)”.

He (the man) said, "You have spoken truly”. We were amazed as the man questioned and he himself said it is right, but he went on to say, "Inform me about Imaan (faith)”. He (the Messenger of Allah) answered, "It is that you should;

i)       Believe in Allah
ii)     His angels
iii)   His Books
iv)   His Messengers
v)     Last Day, and
vi)   In fate (Qadar), both in its good and in its evil aspects”.

He said, "You have spoken truly”. Then he (the man) said, "Inform me about Ihsan".  He (pbuh) answered,

"It is that you should serve Allah as though you could see Him, for though you cannot see Him yet He sees you”.

The hadeeth continues…..

I waited a while, and then he (the Messenger of Allah) said, "O 'Umar, do you know who that questioner was?" I replied, "Allah and His Messenger know better." He (pbuh) said, "That was Jibreel. He came to teach you your religion.

Luqman's Advice to His Son

The Glorious Quran contains precious advices Luqman offered to his son in Surah Luqman. Following is a list of these advices that we should study and implement in our lives. These valuable advices will lead to the straight path Insha Allah.

1.   Luqman warns his son against the greatest injustice man can do.

"O my son! Join not in worship others with Allah. Verily, joining others in worship with Allaah is the greatest injustice/greatest wrong-doing."
[31:13]

·         Luqman called his son to “Tawhid”.
·         Luqman said: "Shirk" is the greatest injustice/wrong doing indeed.

Therefore, the one who associates others with Allah in worship does injustice to Allah who is the owner and creator of the universe. The Mushrikoon are calling Allah's anger and the punishment in hell upon them by doing "Shirk". Allah [SWT] says in the Qur’an [4:48]: Indeed Allah does not forgive association with Him, but He forgives what is less than that for whom He wills.

2. Luqman reminds his son of the rights of the parents on him,

"And we have enjoined on man to be dutiful and good to his parents. His mother bore him upon weakness and hardship” [
31:14].
·         He describes hardships mothers face bearing children.

"And his weaning is in two years; give thanks to Me and to your parents. Unto Me is the final destination."
[ 31:14]

·         Luqman mentions the total dependence of infants on their mothers for two years.
·         We should thank Allah and the parents.
·         The final destination/return is to Allah.

"And if they both strive with you to make you join in worship with me others that of which you have no knowledge, then obey them not, but behave with them in the world kindly."
[31:15]

·         Luqman tells that if the parents are commanding to do something against Allah we should obey Allah’s commandments.
·         We should explain about following the Allah’s commandments to the parents gently.
·         We should be kind to the parents even they are Mushriks.

3. Luqman then describes some of Allah's Might.

"O my son! If it be equal to the weight of a grain of mustard seed, and tough it be as a rock, or in the Heavens or the earth, Allah will bring it forth. Verily Allah is subtle, aware."
[31:16]

·         Allah's Knowledge is so perfect. Anything big or small, Allah knows it and controls it.
·         Luqman reminds Allah's absolute control over His kingdom.
·         Such might and power must not be ignored by anyone.

4. A great advice to Luqman's son is to establish regular prayer on time and with the best possible performance,

"O my son! Offer prayer perfectly." [31:17]
·         Prayer is the direct connection between a Muslim and his Creator.

5. Luqman advises his son to do good, direct people to good and forbid evil.

"Enjoin (people) for good, and forbid from evil." [31:17]

6. After the useful advice he offered his son, Luqman recommended patience in implementing them, and in all matters of life,

"And bear with patience whatever befalls you. Verily, these are some of the important commandments ordered by Allaah with no exemption."
[31:17]

·         Allah loves the people who are patient [Glorious Qur’an 3:146].

7. Arrogance is not an attribute of a Mulim. Allaah warns the arrogant people with punishment in Hellfire. Luqman said:

"And turn not your face away from men with pride." [31:18]

·      Abdullah bin Mas'ud [r.a] said that the Messenger of Allah [pbuh] said; He who has in his heart the weight of a mustard seed of pride shall not enter paradise. A person (amongst them) said: “Verily a person loves that his dress should be beautiful and his shoes should be beautiful”. He the Prophet said: “Verily, Allah is the most beautiful and He loves beauty. Pride is disregard the truth and to look down upon the people. [Muslim]

8. To be moderate is a great attitude anyone can possess,

"Nor walk in insolence through the earth. Verily Allaah likes not each arrogant boaster."
[31:18]

·         Allaah does not like that man is arrogant and proud of themselves.
·         Story of Qarun: Allah made him sink into the earth.

Narrated Ibn `Umar: The Prophet said, "While a man was walking, dragging his dress with pride, he was caused to be swallowed by the earth and will go on sinking in it till the Day of Resurrection." [Bukhari, Bk 4. No: 692]

9. Luqman's advise to be moderate in walking and talking.

"And be moderate in walking."
[31:19]

·         Islam offers a code of conduct in every aspect of life.
·         The way Muslims walk and talk are also regulated.
·         Islam offers guidelines to be the best in every aspect.

10. Luqman reminds his son that being harsh while talking will liken his voice to the braying of a donkey.

"And lower your voice. Verily the harshest of all voices is the voice (braying] of an ass!!"
[31:19]

Quotations for Thought............... from the Glorious Qur’an
Why we are created?

I have only created Jinns and men, that they may serve Me. [51:56]

Why Islam?

If anyone desires a religion other than Islam (submission to Allah), never will it be accepted of him; and in the Hereafter He will be in the ranks of those who have lost. [3:85]

The Religion before/with Allah is Islam. [3:19]

Do you love Allah?

Say: "If ye do love Allah, Follow me: Allah will love you and forgive you your sins: For Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.". [3:31]

Why obey the messenger Muhammed (pbuh)?

What Allah has bestowed on His Messenger (and taken away) from the people of the townships,- belongs to Allah,- to His Messenger and to kindred and orphans, the needy and the wayfarer; In order that it may not (merely) make a circuit between the wealthy among you. So take what the Messenger assigns to you, and deny yourselves that which he withholds from you. And fear Allah; for Allah is strict in Punishment. [59:7]

What will those who are firmly grounded in knowledge say?

We believe in the Book; the whole of it is from our Lord. [3:7]

"Our Lord!, Let not our hearts deviate now after Thou hast guided us, but grant us mercy from Thine own Presence; for Thou art the Grantor of bounties without measure”. [3:8]

Does your heart need rest/tranquility?

Verily in the remembrance of Allah do hearts find rest!. [13:28]
